Fishing in Lake Mitchell
Lake Mitchell covers 5,850 acres on the Coosa River with 147 miles of shoreline. It is located off I-65, 10 miles east of of Clanton in central Alabama,
Lake Mitchell’s waters are very fertile and support high densities of bass and crappie. The tailwaters on the upper end of the lake is a popular with anglers.
Mitchell Lake’s most popular boating access areas are Higgins Ferry on the west side of the lake and Barrett’s Fish Camp (launch fee) to the east, although several private marinas located on the lake also include boat ramps.
The most common sport fish found in Lake Mitchell include the Alabama spotted and largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker and crappie. Fishing for channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish is also popular. Biologists report growth rates for bass and crappie are near the statewide average. Bluegill and shellcracker are abundant.
